ABOUT AFRICANS IN MEDICINE TABLE OF CONTENTS Mission Statement Goals & Objectives Domestic Endeavors Constitution & Bylaws Tentative International Projects Our Mission: To forge a cohesive unit that will harness our diverse intellectual and creative energies towards exerting a positive and progressive impact in our society both in the United States and in the continent of Africa. Top Goals & Objectives: To establish a community that provides personal and professional support for African medical students in the United States and in the African Diaspora. To promote unity and transcend our differences in order to avoid the pitfall of divisiveness along national, cultural, and ethnic lines and to attain our mutual purpose. To provide a community-wide forum and structure within which our members may exchange views and formulate and implement coordinated programs and policies reflecting their common interest and shared concerns. To provoke thoughts on unique and progressive approaches to improving health care in the African continent and pursue innovative, proactive, and constructive ideas. To direct our collective ideas, skills and talents towards helping each other achieve personal and professional goals, as well as meeting the goals of the organization as a whole. Address our role in the development of our continent, Africa, especially as it relates to health care.
Top Tentative International Projects: Develop contacts in each African country/region Providing scholarships to (an) African secondary school student(s) who intends to pursue medicine as a career Providing scholarships to (an) African medical student(s) to cover costs of books and exams Sponsoring a child/family Establishing a mobile clinic with the dual purpose of taking health care where it is needed as well as providing health education Establishing a women’s health ambulance Establishing an online pen pal system to connect with and develop relationships with African medical students in African medical schools and collaborate with them to address needs they identify Collaborating on projects with progressive, innovative, and committed African health and non-health professionals and community members in Africa and in the States. This includes indigenous African-founded NGOs, nurses, and public health officials in Africa, in keeping with a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary philosophy Collecting and donating books to African medical schools and starting online subscription to journals for African medical students to access
