Love, Sex, Relationships And Your Health
A.I.M. Panel Discussion Co-Sponsorship with the African Students Association of Michigan May 26, 2007. 10:30am - 1 pm
The panel comprised of Dr. Eric Ayers, a med-peds physician and sexuality expert; Dr. Yusif Addae, an ob-gyn; Dr. Angela Njoku, an internist; and Ms. Yetunde Oloyede, an RN. The goal of the panel discussion was to educate the audience, comprised of African undergraduate students, on sexuality as it relates to health. It was small, interactive, and fun roundtable setting in order to ensure the comfort of the students. The panelists addressed several topics such as men's and women's health, homosexuality, self-awareness and self esteem, and STDs. Activities included a game where sexual myths were discussed and debunked. There were also sex education literature available which was provided by the department of health and planned parenthood. At the end, the panelists were recognized and given thank you gifts (card, mug, AIM pin and keychain). A couple of them remained behind to continue talking one-on-one with the students. According to the program evaluation forms, majority of the participants were overall pleased with the program and rated it as a "4" for excellent. They would recommend the session to a colleague and the program met their expectations.
We are hoping to use this discussion as the beginning of a community roundtable panel discussion series addressing pertinent health issues in the African community.
